Falkirk are close to agreeing a deal with Latvian international Deniss Melniks in the coming days. The versatile FK Auda ace, 23, has been a regular for the Kekava-based club in the Virsliga over the past three years. Melniks has also played 11 times for Latvia. A defensive player, standing at 6ft 2in, he can play in midfield or at centre-back. The latter is likely to be where he will mainly play for Falkirk with boss John McGlynn having already said throughout last season that he needed more height in his team to defend set-plays. Melniks three-year contract with third-placed FK Auda finishes at the end of the month and the Bairns are believed to have thrashed out a deal that suits all parties to ensure the the ex-Torino youth player is available to join McGlynn’s group for their pre-season camp in Portugal. He would become Falkirk’s fourth summer signing with the club having already secured the services of Craig Sibbald on a pre-contract and duo Jack McMillan and Paul McGovern in recent times. Meanwhile, our sister title the Edinburgh Evening News has reported that Hearts have completed a deal with Falkirk to sign Calvin Miller. The talented winger, who was the Scottish Premiership’s top player for assists last term, is set to undergo a medical with Derek McInnes’ side in the near future. His move should be confirmed this week. Before heading to Tynecastle for the penultimate match of the campaign, boss McGlynn admitted that the 28-year-old would be a hard player to replace. “He’s performed so well,” McGlynn beamed. “He scooped up all the Falkirk player of the year awards last week. His team-mates recognise how well he’s done, the management team have recognised that too. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s interest in Calvin. He’s an entertainer, he’s exactly what we wanted and I’m delighted we brought him to the club. I don’t want to lose him, by the way, he’s got a contract for another year so I don’t want to lose him. He’s a joy to work with. When I look at a football team, when I want wingers, he’s what you want. They’re hard to find. We’re lucky that we’ve got him and in an ideal world, obviously we have been trying to get him to extend his contract. Such is life, agents and what like.”
